Facette E-Max ou Zircone: quelle céramique choisir en 2026 ?

E-Max or Zirconia: these two high-end dental ceramics dominate the veneer market in 2026. But they are not equal in every case. This article breaks down their technical differences to help you make an informed choice during your consultation.

Understanding the two materials in 30 seconds

The E-Max (lithium disilicate) is a pressed ceramic made by Ivoclar Vivadent, a Swiss-Liechtenstein specialist that has been the world leader in dental materials for over a century. It is the benchmark ceramic for anterior aesthetics thanks to its natural translucency that mimics enamel.

The zirconia (zirconium oxide) is an extremely strong ceramic, initially developed for high-performance industrial applications before being adapted to dentistry. Its exceptional mechanical strength (up to 1,200 MPa) makes it the material of choice for areas of high masticatory pressure.

Translucency: E-Max wins for pure aesthetics

Translucency is the ability of a material to let light pass through. It is what distinguishes a natural tooth from a plastic-looking one visible at first glance. E-Max comes in 5 different translucency levels (HT High Translucency, MT Medium, LT Low, MO Medium Opacity, HO High Opacity) that the dental technician selects according to your natural shade and the desired result.

In its early days, zirconia suffered from limited translucency — hence its sometimes overly white or opaque appearance. Recent generations ("high-translucency" or "anatomic" zirconia) have considerably narrowed this gap, but E-Max keeps the advantage for incisors and canines in full light.

Translucency verdict: E-Max for maximum anterior aesthetics, highly translucent zirconia for cases that combine aesthetics and strength.

Mechanical strength: zirconia wins for high-pressure areas

Strength is measured in MPa (megapascals, the maximum pressure withstood before fracture). Here are the figures:

  • E-Max Press: 400 MPa (excellent for veneers)
  • E-Max CAD: 360 MPa
  • Monolithic zirconia: 900 to 1,200 MPa depending on the grade
  • Natural enamel (reference): ~250 MPa

In concrete terms: 400 MPa is already well above the strength of natural enamel. For veneers placed on anterior teeth (which undergo little masticatory pressure), E-Max is more than sufficient. For reconstructions on molars (which withstand up to 800 N of force during strong chewing), zirconia is more reassuring.

Clinical indications: a material for each tooth

Here is how practitioners choose in practice:

  • Incisors and canines (visible in a full smile): E-Max veneer — maximum translucency, unbeatable aesthetics, 15-20 year durability with care.
  • Premolars (visible area but subject to some pressure): E-Max or zirconia depending on aesthetic preference vs strength.
  • Molars (posterior, barely visible, high stresses): zirconia crown — maximum strength.
  • Reconstructions on devitalized teeth or extended bridges: zirconia for robustness.
  • Mild to moderate bruxism: zirconia (resistance to microfractures caused by grinding).

Price in Tunisia: nearly identical for veneers

At the Dental Veneers Tunisia Clinic, E-Max veneers and zirconia crowns are offered from €210 per tooth (2026 prices, all-inclusive: digital impression, laboratory fabrication, placement, 5-year warranty). This price equivalence lets you choose the material solely on technical criteria, not on budget considerations.

For comparison, in Europe the same procedures are billed between €800 and €1,500 per tooth — significant savings in Tunisia, with identical material quality (same Ivoclar blocks for E-Max, same CE-certified zirconia batches).

And what about composite?

Composite (light-cured resin) is a third option, much cheaper (€80 to €150 per tooth in Tunisia) but with a lifespan of 5 to 8 years only (versus 15-20 years for E-Max and zirconia). It suits tight budgets or temporary solutions, but offers neither the translucency of E-Max nor the strength of zirconia. It also yellows more quickly with coffee, tea or tobacco.

Our practical recommendation

Here is the simple rule applied by the partner practitioners:

  1. If you want aesthetic veneers on the visible teeth → E-Max (default option).
  2. If you have severely damaged or devitalized teeth, or known bruxismzirconia (strength is the priority).
  3. If you have a mixed case (healthy incisors + damaged molars) → combination of E-Max at the front + zirconia at the back.

The final decision always rests with the practitioner after a direct examination of your case. During your consultation in Tunis, the practitioner will offer you the optimal combination based on your morphology, your occlusion and your aesthetic expectations.
